The objective of Stiftelsen Norsk Luftambulanse is to improve emergency medical services in Norway through the following activities:
- Promoting specialised pre-hospital emergency medical services performed by helicopter, aircraft, boats or vehicles.
- Supporting initiatives that enhance emergency medical care in the ambulance services and the primary healthcare services.
- Promoting first-aid training to non-professionals, pre-hospital personnel and medical personnel.
- Supporting initiatives that strengthen the emergency medical treatment chain from the accident location to definitive care in hospital.
- Supporting and performing research into emergency medical care.
The Norsk Luftambulanse-group comprises Stiftelsen Norsk Luftambulanse (The Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation) and its subsidiary company Norsk Luftambulanse AS (Norwegian Air Ambulance).
Stiftelsen Norsk Luftambulanse is Norway’s largest non-profit making membership organisation with 800 000 members, representing about 20% of the Norwegian population. 3 600 companies support SNLA. The organisation conducts training programmes, research, national projects for improved preparedness in the case of heart attacks and traffic accidents and is also a driving force in relation to the authorities on issues concerning emergency medical services.
Norsk Luftambulanse AS is an operator company running the air ambulance helicopter service on assignment from the public authorities. NLA AS operates eight of Norway’s 11 air ambulance helicopter bases. At Lørenskog outside Oslo, the company also operates a larger helicopter suitable for the transport of patients requiring advanced medical treatment and surveillance. The company provides medical practitioners to the rescue helicopter based at Ørland and the ambulance helicopter service at Dombås.
